'When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.'
— Tagline for Dawn of the Dead (1978), which is where this game got its title from.
No More Room In Hell is a Half-Life 2 co-op mod released in 2011 by Matt 'Max' Kazan. It was eventually released as a standalone mod on 2013, available for free on Steam.
You play as a survivor in several maps belonging to two gamemodes: completing objectives to be extracted by the military in 'Objective', or holding out and surviving for a fixed amount of waves in Survival. Unlike many other zombie FPS survival games on the market, this one stands out in its realism: ammo has weight, there are no icons on the HUD except for ammo, and firearms use real ballistics such as bullet drop. Combine this with other server mods such as friendly fire and Nightmare mode, and you have a recipe for a very, very tense game of survival.

This game provides examples of:
- A.K.A.-47: Averted. All firearms are given their proper names, except for the Orion Flare Gun, which is simply titled 'Flare Gun'. Even the ammunition packaging are clearly branded with real life names, e.g. The .22lr ammo is packed in a Winchester Wildcat .22lr box, the .308 in a Federal PowerShok .308 box, the .45 ACP in a Wolf .45 ACP box..
- An Axe to Grind: Both hatchets and fire axes are available as melee weapons, the former as a one handed melee, the latter as a double handed one. The fire axe, despite using up a lot of inventory space and draining stamina quickly, is one of the best melee weapons in the game.
- Ate His Gun: There's a key binding that allows you to turn your gun on yourself. If you're infected, it prevents your corpse from reanimating and attacking your teammates. Just make sure you have a round chambered in your gun..
- Awesome, but Impractical: The MP5 and MAC-10 automatic weapons. On one hand, they boast the highest mag capacity at 30 rounds, and are chambered in common pistol ammo. On the other hand, they take up 1/3 of your inventory, lack the 'focus' mechanic that allows you to headshot any zombie if you stand still for 3 seconds, and in the case of the MAC-10, cannot be toggled to semi-auto, which means you could fire off a large burst of ammo without intending to.
- Bare Your Midriff: The 'Badass' player model does this.
- Bayonet Ya: The SKS can spawn with a bayonet, which replaces the Pistol Whip animation with a quick stab with the bayonet. This makes it a fairly effective melee weapon.
- Boom, Headshot!: See Removing the Head or Destroying the Brain below. More pronounced in 'Realism' mode: even the otherwise weak .22 Long Rifle and 9mm Parabellum will one-shot any zombie if it's a headshot.
- Boring, but Practical:
- Melee weapons, when compared to firearms. Considering the rarity of both firearms and ammunition, as well as the amount of inventory space both take, melee weapons are the best all-purpose weapons, while firearms are only useful for clearing out hordes when you're cornered/surrounded and for taking on multiple runners.
- The PSE Deer Hunter Compound Bow compared to other ranged weapons. Because arrows in this game are indestructible, provided that the arrow hits a zombie/surface that's not out of bounds, it can be retrieved, potentially meaning infinite ammunition. A good survivor can clear out an entire horde with a bow and a single arrow.
- The shove. It does no damage to enemies, but can stop a zombie from biting or attacking, and allows for a counterattack.
Advertisement:
- Carry a Big Stick: Blunt weapons don't deal as much damage as bladed ones and tend to be heavier, but have a higher chance of staggering the target like a shove.
- Chainsaw Good: One of the available weapons is a chainsaw with two attacks: a simple swing that doesn't consume fuel, and a powered swing that can shred a horde of zombies in a single swing.
- Charged Attack: Holding the fire key with a melee weapon charges up for a stronger whack, though it tires you up a lot faster than a quick swing. For handguns, standing still in iron sights for three seconds puts you into focus mode, which makes any headshot an instant kill, and has a greater chance of knocking back zombies.
- Chew Bubblegum: One of James' taunts, with a 'fucker' tacked on the end for extra emphasis.
- Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Normal jerry cans, used to explosively set an area on fire when shot and burn zombies, are red. Mission-critical jerry cans, which are used to blow up certain walls/blockades, are yellow with two red stripes, have a note stuck on them which says 'Notice this' with a smiley face, and, for good measure, are indestructable until brought to their designated walls/blockades.
- Dramatic Gun Cock: Surprisingly Played Straight, despite all the other realistic elements. Whenever the Winchester Model 1892, Mossberg 500A, and Remington Model 870 are drawn, they all have their lever/pump worked far enough to eject the current round in the chamber. This is also done with the MAC-10, but that's more justifiable due to it being open-bolt.
- Drop the Hammer: Another available melee weapon is the sledgehammer. Like the fire axe, it is two handed, takes up a lot of inventory space, and drains stamina quickly, but is still considered one of the best melee weapons in the game. There's also a claw hammer for putting up barricades. It too can be used as a weapon, albeit an rather ineffective one.
- Dual Wielding: That one-handed weapon of yours pairs up nicely with a Maglite on your left hand. Unlike other games, there's no downside at all to it aside from the weight of the light in your inventory.
- Flare Gun: Can be used to signal a helicopter to airdrop supplies in survival mode, or set zombies on fire, which after a few seconds, will burn a zombie to a crisp. There's a chance that a zombie on fire will start running, though.
- HA HA HA— No: One of Captain Munky's 'No' lines.
- Hold the Line: Essentially the whole point of the survival maps, which task survivors to hold off waves of increasingly large zombies, occasionally receiving a supply drop from the national guard. Unlike most zombie survival scenarios in games however, survival maps are very much winnable; get to wave 9 or 10 and an escape will be made available to the survivors (or in the case of one map, rushing to shut off all the zombie access points).
- Infinite Flashlight: The Maglite. It's way better than the lighter for combat and navigation and can be dual-wielded with a one-handed weapon of any sort, but unlike the lighter, it has to be found and takes up inventory space (about the same as a small melee weapon).
- Interface Screw: The lower you are on health, the more black and white your screen gets. When you're bleeding, the borders of your screen will flash red. If you're infected, the borders of the screen will display red veins that slowly take over your screen the closer you are to succumbing. Gene therapy has a 12.5% chance of blinding you, but only for 30 seconds.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: One of Captain Munky's taunts is 'No more room in hell is a documentary, and it's filmed in real time!', while one of Harry's taunts is 'He he he, looks like my video game skills are gonna come in handy today!'
- Little Useless Gun: Played with. In normal gameplay, it takes more than one headshot from a 9mm or .22 gun to kill an adult zombie, but such weapons tend to have a large magazine capacity, the ammunition is more lightweight than most, and focusing (aiming down the sights without moving for 3 seconds or more) makes them able to one-shot a zombie. Averted in 'Realism' mode, where a headshot with any gun is a kill.
- Machete Mayhem: One of the best melee weapons in the game, and the best one handed melee weapon. It deals less damage than the fireaxe and sledgehammer, but drains stamina less quickly and can be used in conjunction with a maglite, making it useful for dark maps (which is to say, pretty much every single offical objective map).
- One Bullet Clips: Much like with the Dramatic Gun Cock, this is Played Straight, despite the other bits of realism in the game (though this one is more obviously for the sake of gameplay). Unlike other examples, the game tracks the rounds inside the chamber, and each weapon has a different reload animation depending on whether or not said weapon has one in the chamber. If the gun is completely dry, your character will load the gun with a fresh mag, and cock it normally (in the case of shotguns, a round will be placed in the chamber, and then the ammo will be loaded in the tube mag); otherwise, you will replace the mag with a fresh one, or top off the mag for tube fed weapons, and the extra shot counts. In an addition, holding 'reload' makes your character check how much ammo is in the mag and there's a separate key binding to unload the gun.
- Quick Melee: In the form of a shove that makes the zombie stagger a little distance back. It deals no damage, but can stun a zombie for a little breathing room, stop them from retaliating in melee, or break grabs.
- Rapid-Fire 'No!': One of James' 'No' lines.
- Removing the Head or Destroying the Brain: The absolute best way to wreck a zombie is by blasting its head to bits, either with a strong melee attack or a bullet. Weaker calibers may need more than one application.
- Shout-Out:
- As mentioned above, the name of the game is a reference to Dawn of the Dead (1978).
- The whole survival map nms_notld is a reference to, you guessed it, Night of the Living Dead (1968). Additionally, the national guard will occasionally exclaim 'They're coming to get you, Barbara!', which is coincidentally also the name of the achievement obtained by surviving the aforementioned survival map. (The achievement image doesn't even attempt to hide it, consisting only the words 'NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD'.)
- One of the character models is basically Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski. Additionally, the achievement for getting 500 kills with the Colt M1911A1 is called 'Mark It Zero'.
- Another character model is basically Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, complete with raincoat. The achievement Hey, Paul!, obtained by getting 250 kills with the fireaxe, depicts Bateman holding an axe.
- The image for the achievement 'Social Responsibility', obtained by killing yourself with a gun when infected, depicts Private Steel with a gun to his head moments before he shoots himself. There sure are a lot of references to George A. Romero, aren't there?
- The achievement names themselves contain lots of references:
- It's Always Sunny in Liverpool.
- Band of Brothers.
- Chainsaw Massacre, obtained by getting 250 kills with the chainsaw. The achievement image even depicts Leatherface waving a chainsaw around.
- One Free Man, obtained by getting 250 kills with the crowbar.
- Saturday the 14th, complete with a picture of a hockey mask.
- First Blood, a reference to the Rambo franchise, with a picture of Rambo holding a bow.
- Katniss. The achievement image depicts, well, Katniss.
- White Death, which, in reference to the real White Death's achievements, requires you to get 500 kills with the only wooden stocked bolt-action rifle in the game.
- Three of Bingo Bango's taunts are taken straight from Snatch:Bingo Bango: I'll cut your fucking Jacob's off!Bingo Bango: You're on thin fucking ice, my pedigree chum!
- The Captain Munky voice set has a taunt which references Fist of the North StarCaptain Munky:HWAATAAA!You Are Already Dead.
- Sprint Meter: Unsurprising for a relatively realistic zombie game, there's a stamina bar. Sprinting, jumping, and melee attacks will use stamina. Unlike most examples, it's invisible, and drains very quickly, moreso if your inventory is mostly full. The only way to gauge how close to empty you are is that when you're nearly empty, your heart starts audibly pounding and your character starts exhaling loudly, and if you're completely exhausted you are rendered unable to attack with melee weapons, jump, or sprint.
- Ten-Second Flashlight: You always spawn with a lighter that goes out exactly 60 seconds after being lit (which may take a few strikes), has a very limited illumination radius and can't be held alongside a weapon. Holding the fire key makes your character push it forward, presumably a function for igniting things, but it has no gameplay value.
- Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Holding down the 'drop' button will make you throw what you're holding, which can actually be thrown with enough velocity to kill the undead, provided that you actually hit your target.
- Undead Child: There are zombie children. They're tiny and fast and can flank you while you're dealing with a horde, but they're flimsier (one bullet or good melee hit cracks their skulls apart messily), their attacks are weaker and they can't grab a player.
- Zombie Infectee: If you're bitten, there's a chance that your vision will start getting a nerve-like red effect on the borders. That means you're infected, and it's a matter of time before you turn, but it's not automatically a Game Over: Phalanx pills reset the timer to 0, and the rare Gene Therapy item not only removes it completely, but also makes you immune to further infection.
- Zombie Apocalypse: The game focuses on a more realistic approach to one of these.
- Zombie Gait: Depends. Most of the undead will shamble, stagger or limp after players, but a select few can runnote and zombie children always run. A zombie set on firehas a chance of getting a drastic increase in movement speed.

Equip the fire axe, as it weakens zombies very effectively. Find regular zombies. Children, runners, and the National Guard have varying amounts of health and are not suitable. Use a short tap to hit the zombie's head with light swing. If done correctly, your character should swing the axe horizontally and take the zombie's health down so the next hit will bring it down. If your hit did not make him stumble, immediately press V to shove him. Switch to bare fists (for 'Bare Knuckle') or the Maglite (for 'Blinded By the Light'), and hit it in the face. Repeat the process as many times as needed to get the 'Bare Knuckle' and 'Blinded By The Light' achievements.

Welcome to the No More Room in Hell Beginner's Guide!
Learn the essential skills and facts to benefit you and fellow survivors in the zombie apocalypse! In No More Room in Hell, you play as a survivor in a group of 2 to 7 others who have banded together with the common goal of escaping the zombie nightmare. Tasks that you and your fellow survivors must accomplish depend on the map and it's gamemode.
Teamwork is vital in No More Room in Hell, great for those who want a slower paced co-operative experience. Stick together making sure you're within shouting distance, you can't talk to each other unless you're within range!
Conserve ammo & supplies until you really need them; use melee as much as possible and learn which melee weapons are most effective for you. If you have extra/unneeded ammo or weapons, share them with your teammates (Hold the 1 or 2 keys to select/drop), you'll thank them later when they have that extra round to take out that pesky zombie who's grabbed onto you by surprise. Be observant, you may miss some vital shotgun ammo or an important objective item if you look around carelessly.
Be cautious and alert when you're about to engage with combat against the undead menace; one bite and you can become infected or start bleeding profusely. Never forget the power of shoving (V) zombies away from you, it can make or break your escape route.
If you follow everything written here, you should be well prepared for the zombie apocalypse and get the most out of your No More Room in Hell experience.

Objective
- Objective mode focuses on banding a group of survivors together, who must complete a series of predetermined tasks in order to complete the map they're in.
- Unlike in other zombie mods, No More Room in Hell uses an Objective Branching system which allows the map to randomly decide which objective the survivors must complete before they move on into the next area. This means that in every new round, the tasks that the survivors must accomplish may change, so they have to be vigilant and cautious. The ultimate goal is to reach the extraction zone before time runs out. Generally, Objective maps range from small and linear maps, to large and complex maps.
Realism Mode
- This is an optional mode that server admins can switch on or off. By switching sv_realism to 1, the zombies can now be taken out with just one headshot. However, body shots won't affect them at all. In addition, the checkpoint spawning system is switched off. This means you have to be extremely careful with your one sole life!
A duffel bag that is used to repair zones.
Survival
- Survival mode focuses on two things: Area Defense and Survival.
- The National Guard designated certain areas as 'safe zones' for survivor groups to regroup at and wait for extraction. Unbeknownst to the survivors though, the 'safe zones' are actually being used as zombie bait to lure the massive undead horde away from the major metropolitan areas, to buy the National Guard some time to evacuate the remaining populace (as well as giving them breathing space after constant battles with the undead).
- Players must defend predefined areas (the loading screen and the compass will show where they are) while simultaneously attempting to stay alive. These predefined areas (referred in-game as 'Zones') may differ across each map but generally, they're relatively safe to return to and regroup.
- Zombies will enter the map through a wave system. The longer you survive, the more zombies you must face down (25 zombies in wave one vs. 210 zombies in wave two) and runners/children will start to make a more common appearance.
Weapons
Firearms
- No More Room in Hell has a wide selection of firearms from across all spectrums. They are listed in further detail in this article, but for now we can give you the overall summary on them here.
- In order to use a firearm, you have to first find the gun, and pick up (default key is E). However, you can't pick up another gun which is identical to the one you already have equipped (You can't carry two Beretta M9s for example). After that, you need to check if it has ammo, by holding down your reload key (default R). If there's no ammo, press your reload key if you have some extra rounds for it. In order to fire the actual gun, press your primary attack key (default MOUSE1). In order to go into Ironsight mode, press your secondary fire key (default MOUSE2).
- If the zombies are getting too close to you, you can shove them off with your bash key (default V). This will give you some breathing room. This uses stamina, however!
- Firearms are extremely lethal to zombies, if you aim for the head. In contrast, they won't do much if you aim for their kneecaps or arms.
- Firearm damage is based on the ammo type the gun is using, a gun using .22LR rounds won't be as effective as a gun using .308 rounds.
- In order to switch guns, hold down your inventory key (default 1) and mouse over to your desired weapon. If you want to drop a weapon, either hit G or hold down your inventory key and right click on the desired weapon you want to drop. To holster your weapon (gun or otherwise), hit H.
- Some guns are heavier than others and can take up more space in your inventory (assault rifles are heavier than pistols, for instance).
- By default, ironsights are togglable. This means you can just simply press your secondary attack key once to enable them, and click again to disable them. For users who want their ironsights to be more like contemporary shooters, they can go to Options > Multiplayer > Advanced and un-check 'Enable togglable ironsights'.

New in 1.05:There's a 10% chance that your bullets can knock a zombie back; this applies to each individual pellet in a shotgun shell (shotguns are more useful in close quarters combat!)
Skillshot Mode
Some firearms will allow you to enter a 'focused' aiming mode, which will double your damage and accuracy and give you a 75% chance to knock a zombie back. To activate this mode, simply enter IronSights mode and stand still for 3 seconds. If done correctly, your vision will have a sanguine tint and a Depth of Field effect, along with your character holding his/her breath. This allows you to one shot kill any zombie with any of the pistols, if you head shot them while in Skillshot mode saving you ammunition and time.
Ammo
- Each gun in No More Room in Hell uses a different ammo type. For example, you can't load a Sako 85 with .9mm rounds! They are represent as different ammo boxes of various sizes and shapes.
- In order to drop ammo, hold down your ammo inventory key (default 2) and mouse over to your desired ammo and click on the ammo.
Note:Ammo can be hard to find, so be accurate and only take shots you really need to take!
No Room In Hell 2
Melee
- No More Room in Hell contains many melee weapons that are accessible to you, the player. They are listed in further detail in this article, but for now we can give you the overall summary on them here.
- Unlike the firearms, you start out with your fists, which can be used as a means to attack zombies or break down various items in a level you're in. However, they predictably don't do much damage to zombies (punching undead flesh doesn't do much if they can't feel a thing) but you can still push them away (default V)!
- Melees also have two sets of attacks, quick and charge. Quick attacks are accomplished by simply tapping your primary attack key. Charged attacks are accomplished by holding down your secondary attack key; the amount of time you spend charging multiplies the base attack damage your melee weapon has (max charge is 3.5 seconds, with a 55.8% damage bonus), though it drains your stamina pool.
Note:Like firearms, you should aim for the head! Head damage is considerably higher compared to torso damage.
- Melee weapons are scattered around the level you're in; press your use key (default E) to pick up the weapon.
- In order to switch melee weapons, hold down your inventory key (default 1) and mouse over to your desired weapon. If you want to drop a weapon, either hit G or hold down your inventory key and right click on the desired weapon you want to drop.
- Like firearms, some melees are heavier than others so you have to be careful on what you carry.
New in 1.05:Melee attacks can now knock zombies back. Bladed weapons have a 10% chance to push a zombie back with a quick attack (30% if charged) and Blunt weapons have a 40% chance with a quick attack (80% if charged).
New in 1.05:Melee quick attacks now consume stamina. The amount of stamina required depends on the type of weapon being used. The sledgehammer uses up the most stamina (7 to 8 successful quick attacks before you tire yourself out) while the smaller one handed weapons consume the least stamina (15-25 successful quick attacks).)
- Melee weapons can be thrown by holding down G, however it is usually better to hit a zombie with a melee weapon instead of throwing it.
Tools
- Some melee weapons also double as tools. The barricade hammer and welder fall into this category. The welder can only be used on objectives that call for its usage (ie: fences that need to be unweld). To use the welder, hold down your secondary fire key and approach the desired objective. You know you've done it right if a progress bar appears on your screen! In contrast, the barricade hammer can be used to place boards up in any area (if the level has barricade board usage set up)! In order to use the barricade action, you must find a barricade board (they look like brown, narrow uneven boards). After that, press the secondary fire key. Areas in which you can place boards in are noted with transparent board icons.
Maglite
- The maglite is your flashlight, which is found around the map quite commonly. It can dynamically illuminate the immediate area you're in to yourself and other players in real time. You can use it as a normal melee weapon, but it's usually better to run, or even use fists! In order to turn on the maglite, press your secondary fire key. You can also use the maglite in conjunction with one handed firearms, by pressing F.
Zippo
- Introduced in a recent update, the Zippo is the player's lighter, which can be held out by pressing F without a flashlight, or holding down F if you do have one. The Zippo is automatically given to the player and is not required to find it, After pressing primary attack a few times, the lighter lights up and projects a small flame, which can be used to illuminate an area, but it deals no damage to zombies,if you hold out your lighter for 90 seconds the flame goes out! Further updates will give the Zippo more functionality.
Zombies
No More Room in Hell has a multitude of zombie types. They are listed in this article in greater detail, though a brief synopsis is listed below:
No More Room In Hell Console Commands
New in 1.05:There's a 25% chance that a Shambler/Runner can enter a fake death mode when not killed with a headshot / melee attack to the head. They'll enter a ragdoll phase and will get back up with 50% less health in a certain amount of time.
Shamblers
- Shamblers are your slow zombies, they absorb a lot of damage unless it's directed at the head and can claw the player to harm them. In addition, they can grab a player (immobilizing them) and deliver bite attacks, which will cause infection and possible bleeding.
Runners
- Unlike the shamblers, runners can sprint towards players, and when a player becomes infected and dies, they turn into a runner. Other than that their attack methods are exactly the same; in addition their health is lower so they can take less body shots before going down, and only one or two hits to the head are needed to kill them. Newly killed infected survivors will also become a runner
Children
- Children are faster than shamblers but aren't as fast as runners. They have a faster attack speed, but they're unable to grab and bite players. They are the weakest zombie type in NMRiH; a player can easily take out a child zombie with only a single bullet or a swing of a melee weapon.
Burning Zombies
- Rarely, if you set a Shambler on fire, they might 'morph' into a special kind of zombie where they're now able to sprint rather than walk, and may deal double damage! These zombies should be dealt with first since they have the element of surprise (an entire group of survivors can get wiped out). Eventually, the fire will scramble the brain and kill the zombie.

Infection and Death
Death
- Death is an unfortunate and tragic event in most societies. If you die from a zombie (or friendly fire), you will be taken to spectator mode. Some maps may have checkpoints so if the survivors progress far enough, you can get a second chance and respawn. If you die again however, you head back to the spectator mode and you will remain there until the survivors either finish the map (by completing objectives or dying), or if they reach another checkpoint.
Infection
- Infection is a slow death process that you can get if you're swiped enough at or bitten by various zombies. If you're infected, your vision starts to blur out, a strange sound effect will play once in a while, a special vision effect appears at the edges of the screen, and your breathing gets frantic. Eventually when you die (even if you're killed by a non-zombie related source like fall damage), you will fall down to the ground in a special death animation and after a predetermined time (usually a few moments), you will reanimate as a member of the undead, and as a runner, too! You can temporarily stop the infection though, if you use the Phalanx item. Phalanx (or pills for short) are represented as a small pill bottle item. They won't last long however (3 minutes), so you have to make the best of your life before you succumb to your death!
New in 1.05:The time it takes for you to become a zombie has been extended to two minutes.
New in 1.07.2:Zombies now only infect when eating.
Communication
Voice
- Voice communication is distanced based, players who are far away from you cannot hear you, and vice versa. You have to stay close to your teammates if you want to effectively communicate with them. If you and other players have the walkie talkie item equipped however, you can talk to them regardless of the distance they're away from you.
Note:Many new players don't know voice chat degrades (gets quieter) with distance.
Text
- The things described for voice chat applies to text chat as well; only difference is that even with a walkie talkie, you can't communicate with far away players!
Voice Commands
- No More Room in Hell also has a radial voice command menu for those who want to quickly bark out orders without stopping to type. This is distanced based too (default 3).

No More Room in Hell is a free to play cooperative FPSsurvival horror mod for the Source Engine, and focuses on survival in an “of the Dead” type universe loosely based on Romero’s famous work. The multiplayer co-op game play has been likened more to a survival horror game than a typical first person shooter, but the game relies on typical first person mechanics.
Fight your way with friends through multiple mission types and objectives while trying to avoid becoming infected by zombies yourself. Should you become infected, do you warn your teammates or keep quiet and hope your situation improves? The choice is yours. Speaking up could earn you a quick death at the hands of your own teammates.
Players are able to modify their server rules and can make the game more realistic by not using typical gameplay features like a HUD or even crosshairs. Even voice chat and text chat is limited by distance so keep your friends close. While some servers opt for unlimited ammo, the traditional gameplay keeps things dire by providing very little ammo and a sense of dread as zombies of different varieties close on your location. Some are fast, some may be slow, and in the end, it may not be a zombie that is the most dangerous to you.
Being a mod, No More Room in Hell is constantly being added to and improved and many more features are slated to be released this year to improve the look, feel, and addictiveness of the game. While the game can get repetitive at times, No More Room in Hell is a pleasant diversion and one that is likely to keep getting better over time.
